As the first day of August dawns, the first thing many people do is to check the calendar to check out what day is the 14th. The vast majority of people plan their two weeks based on this important event.
August 14th is the Independence Day of #pakistan, a day that has lost all symbolic meaning for everyone born after 1980s. Thus, this day is only one of the many holidays that Pakistanis enjoy officially and unofficially. Every generation has their own way of spending the day. However, since the number of people who actually experienced the horrors of Partition and the sorrow of uprooting from their ancestral hawalis and baghs has declined, both in letter and spirit, Pakistanis do not have any real agenda for the big day.
Thus lack of agenda means that many people, particularly the youth are clueless on how to spend the day. Many mistake it as another holiday to spend in traditional ways. This means that the they spend the first half of the day sleeping and the second half hanging out at the local pan ka khoka, sheesha bar or food joint. Much to the despair of many ‘jigars’, many malls are closed. The result is a much lamented chance of ogling the girls.
In order to save my fellow Pakistanis from wasting the spirit of the day, I would like to suggest the following way of spending the day.
Get the Silencer out of the Bike
The Independence Day is the perfect day of assaulting the hearing of the entire neighborhood. The license to kill is the biggest national flag you could find. Ask a friend to ride with you holding the bamboo flagpole.
In order to ensure everybody shares in the ear-splitting celebration, ask all the friends who own a bike. The entertainment on the side is the opportunity to call names at the pussies who do not participate in the “Freedom Ride’.
Wear the most ridiculous shirt you could find
To carry that eyesore shirt in style, make sure that it is green. Any shade would do since we Pakistanis own the color as per the secret agreement between the British Raj and PML. This is also a perfect excuse to go shopping on the evenings of 12th and 13th of August.
Blast the Music on the loudest speakers you could find
This fun activity allows you and your friends to really enjoy the Independence Day. The most auspicious day to begin the activity is the first day of August. Make sure that you have spoken to the local electricity authority’s team about a temporary ‘kunda’; otherwise, your celebration could be limited to just two hours a day.
This is the perfect opportunity to blast some romantic tunes toward the window of that girl who may or maynot have passed you a smile. Just make sure that you play songs by Pakistani singers. This would make a welcome change from the year-round Bollywood music that we Pakistanis are forced to endure in every marriage function.
Eat Pakistani Food
Celebrate the spirit of Pakistani cuisine by ignoring pizza, noodles, pasta, macaroni, designer coffee and every other foreign dish.
Try Pakistani foods such as kawa biryani, roi wala haleem and Pathan ki chai made out of very questionable chai ki patti. Eating the stuff for a day will not kill you (hopefully!).
Hope you’d have enough of the fun from Independence Day…
