A poor lion once got fed up with his zoo. The habitat was not as cool as that of the wild. He just used to have a mere 1 kg of meat a day. Nobody except the tiny kids outside the cage bars ever respected him.
The lion therefore thought of a way to escape. He became extra-ordinarily obedient and entertaining. Visitors started praising him, ignorant of lion’s silent plans. The lion’s fame spread throughout the zoo world, and finally a Dubai sheikh got him booked for his extra-ordinary lion farm. A heavy price was received by zoo’s management who bade farewell to their transformed beast in a really happy fashion. The lion now was badly dreaming about a farm full of freedom and an abundant supply of animal flesh.
On its arrival in the lavish farm, the lion was offered a giant food bag. The lion opened it quickly but was shocked to see that it contained few bananas and some boiled vegetables. The lion thought that maybe they cared too much for him as they were worried about his stomach as he had recently shifted from Pakistan.
The next day the same thing happened. On the third day again the same food bag of bananas was delivered.
The lion was furious; it stopped the delivery boy and blasted at him, ‘don’t you know that I am the Lion ………..king of the Jungle…………..what’s wrong with your management? What nonsense is this? Why are you delivering bananas and boiled vegetables to me daily?’
The delivery boy politely said, “Sir I know you are the king of the jungle …
But …….. you have been brought here on a monkey’s visa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Moral of the story: Better to be a lion in Pakistan than a monkey elsewhere…
So I guess there is no need to mention who are the Lions who would be the monkeys in a foreign destination. So before going for the visa office consider the following facts.
Analyze your Position
Before making your mind, analyze your working conditions here, what are the working conditions, how much raise you would expect (because in most of the cases of people going abroad for work, there is a contractual bonding with little or no raise).
What will you get in return?
Consider this fact that in abroad you are on a 24/7 working because you are disconnected from the greater share of your immediate family and social life. Consider the opportunity cost of that as well. In my opinion, there must be more than 3 times incremental growth as compared to your current remuneration; otherwise you are worsening off your position.
If you are a star here, don’t go anywhere
Consider the example of a lion, if you are a well recognized person in your relevant field, don’t switch until there is very good position and opportunity, because in normal circumstances, working abroad means you have to start from zero.
Don’t sell yourself cheap
Expect a market competitive salary, I have seen many cases in which people realize after joining that they deserved more. Before saying yes, check out the comparative salaries. Nowadays it’s not a big deal; you can take help from the internet.
