The Rise and Fall of Imran Khan

Pakistanis people are used to disappointments. Almost every entity in the country from the army to political parties to the clergy has been a huge disappointment for the nation. However, the stubborn nation always finds some new phenomenon to pin their hopes.

Imran Khan aka Kaptan in the local parlance is (or rather was!) one of such phenomenon. However, what makes him the worst on the list of national disappointments is the fact that IK has yet to realize the fact that he has become the same politician that he used to publically denounce.

Today the best introduction of IK is his yo-yo politics. Like a little boy, he sees demons under his bed every night. The tragedy is that every night it is a new demon. Another issue with IK is his weak memory. He forgets that the entities he is denouncing today were the objects of praise just two years ago.

Take the example of ex CJ Iftakhar Chaudery. During the PPP government, almost every press appearance of IK included praises for the CJ and a personal appeal of wiping the slate clean by throwing both Zardari and Sharif in jail. When the elections were announced CJ Iftakhar Chaudery was IK’s only hope of free and fair elections. Now the same CJ is responsible for the massive rigging in the 2013 elections.

On a related note, it is IK who insisted on judicial officials and lower courts judges to be appointed as presiding officers. True to his yo-yo politics, he was the first one to accuse them of electoral rigging.

Another glaring example is the IK’s latest drive against Geo and Jang group. This same group was the one that actually made IK the household name in Pakistan. It was Geo TV that gave him air time and continuous coverage of his roadshows. Now the same Geo TV is the agent of America and UK.

These two examples are enough to highlight the unstable politics of IK. When his party took off (allegedly with the help of ex ISI chief General Pasha), he showed much promise as the force that would sweep the elections and would bring a new beginning to Pakistan. However, that dream was lost when IK choose to surround himself with the discarded material of the two major political parties.

IK still has some time to rectify his image in the eyes of Pakistanis. He must choose whether he is the messiah his partywalas think he is or he is just another old man in starched white cloths.
