is undeniably the most popular sport of modern times. The game has an enormous following in almost every corner of the world, with several nations considering it as their national sport. In this sense, football is also regarded as the language of the entire global community.

Football was first played in its modern form on 19th of December 1863 in England. In 1930, FIFA or Fédération Internationale de Football Association was established to regulate and govern international competitions and events related to football. Soon after its establishment, a world level tournament of men national teams was held in 1932, which is considered as the first .



The contest takes place every four years since then, except in 1942 and 1946 in which World War II took place. The last Word Cup was hosted by South Africa in 2010. The final was won by Spain, who beat Netherlands after going into extra time.

This year, FIFA World Cup is being held in Brazil, the most successful and the most popular nation in the football securing the title 5 times (i-e 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002) and the only country to have taken part in each of the World Cup finals tournament.


Some amazing facts about the World Cup Finals

There were no semi finals and finals in 1950’s World Cup.

FIFA took an exceptional format in 1950 finals. Instead of a knock off round among the four teams (semi finals), the Champion was decided by the “final round-robin group” , a kind of league round in which each of the team played a match with the other. The match between Uruguay and Brazil was the crucial match, which put Uruguay ahead on points and ensured that they finished as top of the group.

There were no 3rd and 4th places in the 1930 Football World Cup

There are no matches for the third and fourth places in the 30’s. FIFA recognized these positions afterwards, using the overall records of the teams in the tournament.

All the Champions have their name engraved on the World Cup trophy.

The team wining the finals takes the FIFA World Cup trophy and the nation’s name is engraved on the bottom of the trophy.

The first trophy, originally named Victory,  but renamed later to pay tribute to former FIFA president Jules Rimet, was a gold plated sterling silver trophy. Brazil Won the trophy in 1970 and ordered a new one. Subsequently, in 1983, the trophy was stolen and never recovered.
